Peebles is a department store chain in the eastern and upper-midwestern United States. It is owned by Stage Stores, which also operates under the Bealls, Palais Royal and Stage banners. Peebles states: "Our specialty is bringing nationally-known, brand name apparel, accessories, footwear and cosmetics to small towns and communities throughout the U.S."[1]

History

The company's first store was opened in Lawrenceville, Virginia, in 1891 by W.S. Peebles, Sr., the company's founder.[2] Peebles is now based in South Hill, Virginia and operates stores mostly in small to medium-sized areas of the eastern and upper-midwestern United States areas of Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, Florida, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

Stages Stores opened its first Northeast Florida location on March 26, 2009 at the Cornerstone Square shopping center in Macclenny, Florida.[3] The company opened 7 new Peebles Stores in the first quarter of 2009. There are plans for 15 additional stores by the end of 2009.[4]
